When Biles got to the vault rotation, she practiced the YDP three times. The little girls’ instincts were dead on. She has never landed it in an international competition, but when she does, it will be the fifth skill named after her. Biles is the only woman in the world to ever do this vault, and she hadn’t done it on a hard landing since podium training at the Tokyo Olympics, just before she started to lose her place in the air. A round-off onto the springboard, then a back handspring onto the vaulting table and then a super high flip in the pike position. All seven local girls eagerly agreed that they thought Biles would be attempting the hardest vault known to womankind: the Yurchenko double pike. In suburban Chicago on Friday, Biles and her training mates started off their podium training on the uneven bars, and vault would be their last rotation of the morning. She then took out the twists in her beam routine and rallied to a bronze medal in the event to close out her second Olympics. After a very scary and nearly disastrous vault in the team final, Biles removed herself from the competition. The twisties are a total disconnect between the body and the brain, and stress can be a trigger. There was no question she would win the team gold and gold in the individual all-around, floor and vault.īut then in Tokyo, Biles got the “twisties,” a misleadingly innocent nickname for a seriously dangerous issue when gymnasts suddenly lose their sense of direction in the air while flipping and twisting. It felt like a farewell to the best gymnast the country has ever seen. Biles received a standing ovation after her last event of the weekend, on floor. Louis hosted the largest crowd ever for a gymnastics Olympic trials. The last time Biles competed in the U.S., it seemed like it would probably be her last competition here. Even watching the greatest gymnast of all time practice is a can’t-miss event. USA Gymnastics typically doesn’t sell tickets to the podium training sessions, and when they do, they never sell 500 of them, as they did for Friday.
